Last night I hosted the second night Seder for six adults. The other day began looking through my motley selection of Haggadahs - all old and beaten up, all politically incorrect. I looked at Amazon and selected Ken and Lauren Royal's "The New American Haggadah" and sent for six. printed copies. (The book is also available on e-version). I paid for all six to be sent in one day; unfortunately only 2 came on Tuesday, the other 4 will come today. What to do? I contacted the guests and asked they bring their Ipads and gave them the link to download the free copies. So, our Seder was combination of "old" and "new", "tree" and "computer".And what of the haggadah, used in whatever form we had? We were very well pleased with it. It is a concise, readable, short, adult version of the seder (which means "order"). I think it was supposed to be a 30 minute version but it seemed to us to be longer. No matter - it was still shorter than the other versions I've used. The subtitle - a "simple" version - is not really true. We all felt that text was clear and thorough. This group of long-time Passover observers all learned things and maybe the reading was made a bit longer by heady debates and quirky asides that the text engendered. For instance, when we were reading the Four Questions, we substituted "daughter" for "son" on two of the questions. But, I think the text was written correctly and a more traditional group would find the text more applicable to their observance.I'm very glad we used "The New American Haggadah" last night and we'll continue to use it in years to come. I didn't cancel the order for the four printed versions on their way to me because I do feel that the Seder is better read from a book and I don't want to deprive the Royals of their meager royalties for their work. We had a delightful Seder last night, helped along by their work in making the holiday "order" more readable.(The only other point I'd like to make is that I don't know if the book is suitable to little children. I think maybe for 10 years of age and up.)

This haggadah replaced one forty years old. I was pleased that the updates on concern for minorities was handled well, and the broader philosophies were not "preachy" but rather are thought-provoking and appropriate. The traditional Hebrew prayers are in there, and a comprehensive story of the Exodus is most informative to even those who go through it every year. I recommend it.

We have been using a children's haggadah for years, long past when our children outgrew it, solely because it made for a short 20-30 minute sedar. I decided to buy this haggadah (well 8 of them) because it said it was a simple sedar that covered everything in a short amount of time. It does just that and has some new traditions that we loved inside, too. (I could not understand why it was telling me to put an orange on the sedar plate, but when we got to that part, it brought tears to my eyes... I'll not spoil it here.) We went through the whole haggadah, the story was told nicely with both english and some hebrew, and we were done in just under 30 minutes. It is definitely more of a reform haggadah, but the hebrew (hebrew and transliteration) is there for the basic prayers and Passover classics. We loved it! I'll be buying a few more copies next year. My husband and I were raised as conservative jews, but have been members of a reform synagogue for the last 15 years.

Most who complain about this book, which I purchased in 2016, either did not read or believe the blurb or look inside the free view available here at Amazon.If you are wanting an "old-school" Passover, why would you get a book talking about "New American" or "Simple Passover"?

Solid, simple. If you want a no frills, basic seder for friends, family and goyim this does a great job.If you are looking for something traditional, keep on looking.

This was a clear path to lovely Passover dinner. Sharing this with newcomers puts them at ease to share in this beautiful tradition.

I wanted to learn more about passover, it worked.

Easy to follow, covered everything in a clear way for people unfamiliar with Passover. Easy to use the Kindle version. Appreciate the modern, liberal, inclusive tone. Highly recommended!

Not bad in concept, it is riddled with misprints. Some sneaky, some just stupid. The diagram 'explaining" the difference between "while" and "loop until" logic is a case in point. Gibberish. It gets better when the typos are in the quizzes used to reinforce learning, changing the meaning and context of questions by substituting whole words.One of the authors keeps making references to Java and EJB references to "clarify" things. If you have no formal Java training, these will sail over your head. Another uses explanations more suited to a child's classroom. What was the audience for this book again?I'm not saying the bok's contents aren't useful or can't be figured out, just that the whole thing needs editing again for unified feel and proof-reading to get rid of all the tuspid yptos.Don't pay full price for it, and start with a bit of SQL knowledge to typo-proof yourself and you should feel OK

I'll echo some comments of other reviewers. For a novice, I would NOT highly recommend the book, only because it feels like the author feels that you should have a good grasp of basic programming and of PL/SQL. The one thing that if I were a novice (which I'm not - Senior Oracle Developer with 17+yrs experience) is that topics that are discuss reference topics in upcoming chapters which he says you should reference. To me that's not good. Every chapter should build on the previous chapter. In one chapter he does this perfectly when reference coding examples (chapter on Triggers).Other than that, I do like Oracle Press Books and I bought this workbook as I'm studying for my Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate certification and I liked the practice questions/answers at the end of each chapter. This helps reinforce concepts I already know and highlight other concepts I was unaware of or had misconceptions about.

This was a valuable resource to me as I am just learning oracle. It is important to understand where this will fit into your learning. The text is not difficult to understand, but you should some have some base experience in some kind of programming language. This book is very good at just telling you exactly and simply how to write PL/SQL. There are 12 chapters with topics like 'functions,' 'objects,' 'error management,' etc... so you shouldn't really expect to get lost anywhere.That is really why I enjoyed this book, it was very straighforward. Chapter, concept, example, summary, exercises. By the end of the book you will be able to at least read and understand any code you come accross and write a few dandy procedures. This was my experience.The thing with learning SQL is just if you try to learn just through google you will find a ton of resources on MySQL and only some on Oracle by comparison. And a lot of the oracle stuff you find will just be MySQL solutions ported over on forums which post WRONG 'guessed' code. And within that the help you will find on PL/SQL is sparse at best. Yes I know there is always the full documentation on oracle.com(ZZZzzzzzzzz).I bought oracles other DBA handbook before this and also have SQL books from MS and o reilly. This book is my favorite so far when comparing format and easyness of reading.

This is a great guide for those who have some databases knowledge. It refers basic vocabulary that a DBA should have in order to understand the basic concepts. It contains examples and tips that show you how to create a queries. It will also be a good exercise if you work along with his web site, you will be able to clarify your doubts.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone studying PL/SQL or desiring to improve their skills in PL/SQL. The author is very knowledgeable on the topic and explains it in a fairly straightforward fashion allowing for relatively quick understanding of the topic. As always it requires effort to develop skills but this book makes doing so much easier then any other book of this type. I recommend this book heavily for the use of students and professionals.

This book has the same issues for programming newbies as other books of this type (yes, even in the 'for Dummies' books).The issues are as follows.1. New terminology/functions is introduced without being fully explained in the text nor is there a reference to where this information can be found.2. Code samples contain code that has not been covered yet or contains exceptions to the rules being taught.3. As new information is taught, the sample code for that particular section contains too many differneces from the code used in the sample code from the immediately preceeding section.The first one is frustrating but a quick search on-line can usually give a more thorough definition of a term or the syntax for a funtion (c.f. try to find "guard-on-entry loop").The last two are the more trying because the sample code is not really searchable. Samples code should build on previous examples and only introduce the new coding currently being covered. Too many new and unexplained functions, clauses, or statements confuse the newbie.

I have done refrigeration for over 30 years and some HVAC in the 80's. I needed some information on current systems and this book did it. Textbooks are for theory, and if you understand how something works it is easier to repair. Another reviewer claimed it didn't tell you how to repair something like change a motor etc. Those kind of things are in equipment manuals. By the way this book actually had the wiring diagram for a smart valve, not something you would usually find in a textbook. No textbook can replace hands on learning but you have to have a good foundation which this book provides. If you think you can read a book and become a master service technician, I would like to see how big that book would be (This book is 1650 pages). As for Nate certification you should get a dedicated Nate Study guide in what you are interested in such as Dewalt HVAC technician certification exam guide.

Excellent book. Wish I bought it instead of rented. It's useful throughout the field, not just for the class I needed it for.

For anyone who is looking into becoming a refrigeration technician, this is a very detailed breakdown of everything needed to become the best tech. If there is a thirst for knowledge in this field, this is the equipment needed to go far in an educated way.

The book is enormous, but poorly organized. The index is much too small to find specific information you might be looking for. For example, there is no one place where you might learn how to hook up the controls for a split AIR/Hydronic HVAC system (i.e. the chain of control). There is also a lot of verbiage wasted on really simple stuff, like simple tools. I suspect the book is intended for beginners taking a class and assumes a lot will be shown and explained in the classroom.

This book was for my husband's HVAC college course he is currently taking. He is very happy with the book. Also we live a hour from the college, so it was very convenient to have it delivered at our home. It cost less than the school charged and it arrived in a couple days.

I'm just really irritated that on my new iPhone 7 plus this book constantly freezes acts weird and doesn't show any of the illustrations that it is referring to in the paragraphs.I have no complaints about the actual book It's written very well and easy to read, I did find a few errors, small things that were easy to realize what they meant but still...Probably works fine on a Kindle...

This book touches on all aspects of the HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) profession. The material can be on the dry side and some sections are more informative than others, but overall its a comprehensive book for anybody interested in learning about how to do this.

I have had this book since may 2015 and it is already falling apart. The binding is coming undone on the spine of the book and im starting to lose pages. Pay $110 for a book and it doesn't last five months. I had to have the book for class it has good info in it and also has some old out dated info in it as well.

I really liked this little/big book! It's the kind of book I pop in my purse for the waiting room, coffee shop or plane ride. I want to describe this woman's writing as authentic, transparent, honest, genuine. This book is funny and radiates much warmth and insight from the Messianic perspective. She incorporates Jewish tradition into her daily worship as a Believer in Jesus Christ, all of which I delight in. She lets us walk with her through the 'how' of her growth in the Lord and the applications in the light of her new faith. She is very quick to address her challenges and let's us listen in on her ruminations about them! Overall, a delightful little book!

I am A Christian and have often thought that some of the Jewish symbols I have heard of and seen were beautiful. Now that I have heard some of the meanings of these traditions I am going to add some of them to my life. This book was a Loy to read and I think every non Jewish person should read this book so they can appreciate the beauty of it.

Amazing book that can change your life in so many ways. An Episcopal priest who has a Jewish heritage tells Christians and other faith group about Jewish rituals which can make a difference in how we live. My favorite are the rituals of grieving after the death of a loved one which can promote healing.

This book is one I'll read again and buy for gifts. It was an eye-opener. I understand Judaism so much better now! Not the textbook Judaism or the Old Testament Judaism we learn about at church, but the personal experience of growing up Jewish, being Jewish, practicing Juduasim, living as a Jew, worshipping as a Jew, and celebrating being Jewish. It inspired me to start carving out time and cutting out activities to eventually establish a true Sabbath. It's about anticipating the Sabbath and saying goodbye until the next Sabbath and living in God's grace and mercy in between. It's about traditions and rituals that focus us on God and draw us into his care and comfort. I thought it was lovely and rich and honest. I appreciate Rev. Lauren Winner sharing her life and beautiful writing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Lauren Winner, the author was raised a kosher Jew and then converted to Christianity as an adult in college. As a practicing Christian, Winner realizes that she misses some of the spiritual disciplines that came from her Jewish upbringing, so the book is about how to adapt some Jewish spiritual disciplines to Christian beliefs. She talks about eating, the image of the body, mourning, keeping the Sabbath and many other things that could inform Christian practice and deepen it. I felt that her observations and suggestions were greatly insightful and practicable. Winner's writing style made me feel like I was sitting next to her at the Mudhouse Cafe, her favorite coffee shop which lends it's name to the title of the book. I would recommed this book for anyone wishing to deepen their connection to the spirit in their everyday lives. It's a wonderful book.

This book is a pretty quick, easy read... but it could end up taking a big bite out of your current allotment of "free time." That is if you decide that you want to implement any of Winner's suggestions, especially in relation to Sabbath or Lord's Day observances. I admit I am intrigued by her description of Jewish Sabbath practices.I appreciated her observation on the liturgy: "Even my friend Meg, who left the too-liturgical Episcopal Church for a praise-song-singing, spontaneous-prayer-praying charismatic church, will, I suspect, discover that she is doing liturgy: After enough time, the rhythm of the praise songs and the (seemingly) spontaneous prayers will become familiar and even routine, a liturgy of its own."As a Lutheran who is a former "charismatic" I am often amused and sometimes annoyed by people who look down their noses at the liturgy because everything is written down and repeats itself week after week. My own experience has taught me that the free-flowing-move-of-the-Spirit churches can be just as repetitive and more so. After singing the same twelve word praise chorus for the thirteenth consecutive time, I start pulling out my beard.Thank God for diversity! I have shed buckets of tears in both kinds of services and God has met me and ministered to me in both places. There are positive aspects to each; and there is always danger of spiritual stagnation no matter where you choose to go to church. What you take away from worship will depend in large part by what you take with you going in.Okay, enough from me... back to the book. I am giving this book four stars. It was enjoyable and it was interesting. It held my attention through its brief pages, but I don't think it changed my life. That is probably more of a statement about where I am spiritually than it is about the content of the book. I agreed with much of Winner's commentary on Christian life and practice and perhaps that's why I held back one star. I pretty much believe what she believes so I wasn't forced to examine my beliefs or practices. We're already on the same page. That doesn't mean that this book couldn't be life changing for someone and I would definitely recommend it.

Skillful wisdom and warm relationship with God is evident in this book. Very well written and insightful. I’m so glad I came upon this book. Robust in challenge to my discipline in seeking my heavenly father.

I loved every page of this book. The comparisons and contrasts between the Jewish traditions verses the traditions of Christianity were so enlightening. As a Christian we are not bound by the law, but I believe that I can benefit from many aspects of adding more thoughtful and intentional acts of worship to my day. I loved the sections on grieving and liturgy the most. I will use this book as a bit of a guidepost to help myself and my family rejoice in the fact that we are Christians who are freed through Christ, but who cherish the simple remembrances and acts of worship that bring us to the very reason we are saved.

My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Kauai but couldn't rent a car or have enough money to take advantage of all the opportunities Kauai has to offer. A few years later we decided to go back and do everything we had missed on our first trip. This book was the perfect buy for our trip. We used this book in conjunction with, "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed" These books helped us plan our entire trip down to the last detail. We were able to do more things and take advantage of what Kauai had to offer that we may have otherwise not known about without this book. The book gave us detailed directions to destinations they talked about in the book. We were able to visit several beaches it talked about and choose ideal snorkeling locations. It warned us of dangerous terrain and locations depending of the seasons.We were able to go on several hikes and explore hidden gems. I loved reading this book and learning more about Kauai and the culture and what this beautiful island has to offer. This book is a must for anyone traveling to Kauai.

Very good book on the trails on Kauai. I found it to be a great resource for our most recent trip to the island, wanting to do several hikes while we were there. Some folks don't like that it doesn't have color pictures throughout but that didn't bother me a bit. The information is much more important to me than pictures.

My husband and I went to Kauai for the first time on our Honeymoon. This book was a great reference. We love adventure and were able to find all kinds of activities and navigate the island in our rental car. We would have missed out on so much of the island without this book.

This book is wonderful with detailed info on hikes, bike rides, snorkeling sites, of the island of Kauai. I am using it to prepare for a 3 week vacation there and find it very detailed and easy to follow. There are no color photos but it's ok considering the content. A must for preparing for your Kauai vacation.

We visited some of the most beautiful sights in Kauai thanks to the descriptions and instructions in this book. Every detail is included in the book. I'm so glad I bought it before our trip. If you plan to hike, bike, snorkel, or kayak I highly recommend ordering a copy.

My wife and I spent two wonderful weeks on Kauai, and this book allowed us to skip the "what is there to do here" step. Instead of fumbling around and wasting a few precious days trying to figure it out once we got here, we read through the Kauai Trailblazer and set our plans in motion. A great book for first-timers (like us)!

This is one of 3 books I purchased. I found the book helpful and easy to use. I do wish the hiking trails were rated according to endurance.
