The book seems to be divided into two parts: the first, mania; the second, depression and recovery.The first part is total mania, like a apeeding train rushing into trouble. He resists no impulse of any sort. 'Anything worth doing is worth overdoing' seems to be his credo. Impulse cash purchase of a round-trip ticket to Tokyo? Yes, he's done it. Any possible tawdry activity in Times Square. Yes. Shopping himself into a guilty funk? ($8,000 in three hours on clothes.) That too.He gets a high-paying job in the art world that fits perfectly with his mania. Now his incredible jetting around the world is a requirement of that job.In the second part, wild cycles from elation to despair fill the pages. His solution involves the title -- electroshock. And lots of prescibed psychoactive drugs.He must be one of the most medicated people on the planet, certainly for a mentally troubled person outside of a hospital. He takes 15 pills every night -- nine diffrent drugs. Some of the drugs require he take other drugs. His anti-psychotic drug needs more pills to control its side effects.Then, too, he becomes an electroshock abuser. He takes lots of the treatments, at least partly because he loves the anesthesia given beforehand!This is both a fast-reading rollercoaster of a book and yet profondly sad. It's not a book of great insight, but at least to me, it seems an accurate narration of a scarey mental world.

Excellent read. A must read for anyone trying to understand bipolar disorder in themselves or a loved one.

I devoured this book in a couple days. I've read multiple books on the topic and this one was like reading the diary of an observer. Certainly not a clinical read. I recommend!

I work with the mentally ill and have a particularly difficult client who has multiple mental illness diagnoses and a personality disorder. In my opinion, his bipolar diagnosis is the one that has wreaked the most havoc in his life and in the lives of his caregivers and loved ones. Prior to reading Electroboy, I wrote to the Andy, the author, who answered immediately, saying he was very busy, but would write more in a few days, when he was back home. He wrote again, as he said he would and though he was not able to provide a lot of help or insight, he offered what he could, in the way of advice. I much appreciated the author taking time to respond to me. I bought and read Andy's book later (mostly out of appreciation for his help, as the reviews had not been great). After all this, I'm sorry to say that my review of the book is "just OK". It is sort of a diary of events, without much insight into the mind of a bi-polar. In fairness to Andy, he may just not realize how very difficult it is for the average reader, who is not bipolar, to understand the workings of the mind, or the rationalizations of someone who is bipolar.

It's hard to get people to understand what it like living like this, but with this book, the lifestyle is put very well into words.

The pain of mental illness crosses all boundaries in society. Sure, a person of means might be less likely to end up homeless after a breakdown, but the agony of being overtaken repeatedly by forces within that one neither welcomes nor trusts, forces that not only ruin lives but also end them, is universal. Disorders of the mind are merciless whether you are young or old, rich or poor, first or third world. In Electroboy, Andy Behrman takes readers on a raw journey, one that takes him high and drags him lower than low. He doesn't gloss over his actions and their repercussions. To have brought us into his world in such a way is a brave thing to have done, and the advocacy he does now for families affected by mental illness is extraordinary. I understand he is at work on a new book, one that shares a new leg of his life's journey. I look forward to reading it when it is published. I expect his road is still not easy, but I appreciate that he is opening his heart and mind so that others may benefit from his experiences. I hope amid the many challenges, he has also gained some joy and peace.

I was thrilled to see a "new" Owen Archer story available in this country. I have enjoyed this series from the start and was doubly thrilled to get it for the price. In this entry Owen is caught in a political web involving the death of the Archbishop and who will be his successor, among other issues. In addition, he is also faced with a decision about what he will do for a job after Thorsby is gone. Will he work for the new Archbishop or accept another offer? He also finds himself in the surprising position of grieving for the old tyrant, after years of feeling resentment at Thorsby's manipulation and threats. Oh, and there are spies, as well as murderers to deal with while trying to find out who among his trusted guards has betrayed him. It is a pot boiler of a plot and I admit that at mid point I was wondering how the mess was going to be resolved. Never fear. The end is satisfying and gives us hope for another outing with Owen, Lucy and all the wonderful supporting characters that Ms Robb has created over the years. There are issues with the plot that I could be grumpy about, but they didn't diminish my enjoyment of the story and I recommend this book for any one who likes a historical mystery, or any historical novel. Ms Robb is knowledgeable and writes well.

Candace Robb's Owen Archer mysteries are always terrific, though "A Vigil of Spies" has the advantage of being a little offbeat, in that it is something of a recreation of a classic Agatha Christie novel in which all the characters are confined within a manor house, and all the action takes place inside that confined space. The story involves intrigue over who will become the next Archbishop of York, now that the current one, John Thorseby--the benefactor, employer, and sometime thorn in the side of 14th century soldier/spy Owen Archer--is on his deathbed. Providing the dying Thorseby no succor at all is the appearance in York of Princess Joan of Kent and her entourage, one of whom has died under mysterious circumstances en route. It is up to Archer to find out who is responsible for the victim's death, and exactly what is behind the royal visit. Candace Robb knows her medieval history and her stories come vibrantly alive through the combination of real historical and fictional characters. "A Vigil of Spies" suffers not at all from its rather claustrophobic setting, given Robb's skill at pacing. The only problem with her books these days is that they are published only in England, which makes them harder to obtain here in the states. But it is worth the effort.

His captain of the guard, Owen Archer,has no doubt that trouble will follow."Yes,all of that happened and then some. Owen was befriended by none other than Geoffrey Chaucer who helps him solve several mysteries.A very fine look at these important historical personages, especially Princess Joan.The parts that were perhaps fictional were very delightful also, including previous relationships. So enjoyable to have all these exciting people folded into one novel. Hoping so that there is yet another book to come, Owen is not done yet by any means.Recommended to all!

I had been flagging in the series, but this one was really satisfying even though the end is nigh for the Archbishop. On his deathbed, okay death approach, the Princess Joan aka the Fair Maid of Kent, wishes an audience. Owen dislikes the idea, but it gets worse when a servant to the emissary of the Bishop of Winchester dies en route. Owen is already suspicious, but then the emissary realizes his documents have been stolen. Owen must discover what is going on and has many strangers to contend with and no Lucie to help, but lots of Magda. The end was wonderful and sad and touching. If this is the end of the series, despite the author's note at the end that she is not done with Owen, it is a satisfying conclusion.

Love this author, great well written stories, interesting historical truths along with her fictional characters. Well developed plots and lots of intrigue. Have read all Owen Archer books (except book 8, cannot find it on kindle) Recommend and share it with all my friends.Not happy that this is the last Owen Archer book.....

Candace Robb does more than sprinkle fiction with history; she encapsulates history with the shroud of its implied mystery. A Vigil of Spies exemplifies this with a cast of characters, real and imagined, who interplay in exacting ways that make you believe you are witnessing events first hand. To add to that, Robb's writing seems to improve over time - eloquent, descriptive, and not wasteful - engaging the reader's concern for characters and outcomes. The Owen Archer Series is a treasure.

I enjoy Candace Robb's studies of life and spies in 14th century England very much. Her writing is very descriptive of the scenery, buildings and life styles of the times and area as well as the ins and outs of court intrigue. I have read the previous books in the series and am looking forward to the next.

I thoroughly enjoy Candace Robb's writing. I feel that if I had lived in the Thirteenth/Fourteenth centuries her characters might have been my neighbors. Owen Archer has truly evolved as a character. From the first book Apothacary Rose, through Vigil of Spies his attitude toward Archbishop Thoresman has become more accepting and understanding. He actually seems to love and respect the Archbishop now. The book was very enjoyable.

I’m not big on “Angel” oracles, so I was delighted to see that in addition to angelic influences, the creators of the Mystical Wisdom card deck incorporated gods, goddesses, fairies, and animal spirit guides.I’m also not a big fan of saccharine messages and affirmations, especially when paired with airy-fairy art that is somehow supposed to make everything okay (it doesn’t), so I am pleased to note that the Mystical Wisdom cards (while certainly inspirational and uplifting) allow for awareness and exploration of life’s complexities.Josephine Wall’s artwork is gorgeous and so much more than “a pretty face.” Each card provides a wealth of detail, color, and imagination. From the rich, moody purple, blue, and indigo of the “Moving Forward” card to the cheery gold, yellow, and green of the “Vacation” card, Wall uses her palette with great skill, weaving into each image a story worth meditating upon.This deck is a wonderful choice for a daily card draw – either for inspiration or to answer a specific question. The deck creators also suggest a 3-card spread that would cover the beginning of the week, the middle of the week, and the end of the week. The deck also works well with Past-Present-Future-Outcome readings and the Celtic Cross.

The artwork on these cards is spectacular. I am attracted to the beautiful colors throughout each card as well as the activity portrayed. These cards are conveniently easy to dictate as they reveal their potential meanings at the base of each card...allowing for an initital interpretation, while the "activity" of the card enables further dictation on a more personal level.I use these on myself and with clients. These are one of my favorite decks to work with as I have entrained myself with them for more accurate readings. I have used many other decks that I never connected with. This deck contains high female energies, but the colors and activities allow for male energies as well.I have been using the Mystical Wisdom deck for 4 months and I will continue to use them as my go-to deck when I am drawn to do a reading for a client or myself.

Really like the waxy texture of these cards; even though they are on the larger size, I find them way easier to shuffle compared to other decks of this size that have laminate sticky-feel and sharper edges. Gorgeous artwork with tons of colors and incredible attention to detail. Excellent pictures for those who want to use visual interpretation rather than just reading the words and looking up the guide book. The card text themselves are also helpful and flexible for almost any question.

LOVE! The artwork is fabulous on these cards! They are certainly very easy to read and follow, easy to shuffle and manipulate. The artwork is definitely whimsical and romantic. It's not a "go to" deck for me, but they are beautiful with some wonderful messages.

These cards are beautiful and the meanings are nice as well. There are not many directions in the included book on different ways to use these cards. I keep them in my desk at work and do a reading daily for myself, and sometimes coworkers

This deck is so beautiful. I love all the pictures, and it works so well with me. Unlike Nature's whisperers' the cards aren't as thick, but I still love them a lot. I've helped people already with them!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Josephine Wall but these cards do not show her beauty. They are all a dull color, not bright and beautiful even though they are Josephine's art work, they would have been perfect if they were all just as bright as the box on the outside. I am so disappointed in them, will see how I connect with them.UPDATE: the words on these cards don't feel very good, I would not buy nor suggest anyone else getting this one. Way better ones out there!
