While looking through my many needlecraft magazines, I came upon a project done by Carol Shinn that I thought was amazing, so I was delighted to see that she had published a book on her techniques. I have been looking for quite a while for a book that showed how to do freestyle machine embroidery which is not the same as doing machine embroidery using digitized designs. With freestyle machine embroidery, you use your sewing machine as a paint brush and thread as the paint, sewing down layers of color to make a picture or design.In my quest I have come upon books that while supposedly about this type of embroidery, spend half the book talking about painting backgrounds, etc. Well if I could paint backgrounds I think I would stick with painting and forget trying to learn how to machine embroider the picture. This book, however, explains some simple projects that you can do with painting blocks of color (or you could print the blocks out using special ink jet photo transfer paper) and then explains how to use your threads to sew out these simple designs. Once you have learned these simple techniques then you go on to learn how to show transparency of colors in your designs. There are plenty of pictures so that you can understand the step by step process including showing the blocks and the spools of thread used in the project and how they combined.The author explains the materials she uses and the whys of what she uses and at the same time going on to describe other material that can be used and how you would need to stabilize it. She also spends time on explaining how a design can distort due to the quantity of thread taking up fabric depending on the way the stitches lie. This is the first I recall hearing about the possibilities of distortion from all the books I have read on freestyle machine embroidery in so it was certainly good to know. Along with her own work she shows examples of other artists and explains their basic techniques and philosophy about what they do.At the back of the book was a page of recommended reading with a long list of books that I hadn't heard of. I think my wish list will be expanding if I can't find the books through my local library. All in all this was a terrific book and one I highly recommend if you are interested at all in this sewing technique. Perhaps after reading this book, I will now be able to go back to my other books on machine embroidery and understand the techniques for combining the thread better.

This is a great resource for textile artists. Great photo-pics and step-by-step instructions for making your own unique project. Doesn't matter what kind of machine you have, this is something that can be achieved on all of them. I love the way she explains and lays out the steps and what to do and what not to do. I love doing garments that are unique and express my sentiments!

I have long admired Carol Shinn's work and was excited to find such a clear and informative book showing her work and methods. The book is all that was promised and more. The photographs are very good and clearly show how Ms Shinn accompishes her wonderful thread paintings. There are excellent examples of other artists' work in this medium and the instructions are concise and thorough. It was also helpful to find that Ms Shinn's methods do not require any high tech sewing machines or specialized equipment. She also gives very good instructions about correcting the problems that might arise while working on fabric. I appreciate good books that deliver what is promised and this one certainly does.

This is threadwork as an artform by itself, not as an additional facet of textile or mixed media art. Many of the pieces and techniques discussed in Carol's book would need thousands of yards of thread to make. She explains clearly how to stitch over a transferred image, and what effect direction of stitching will have. She also shows some great examples of colour blending. There is a gallery of mostly abstract work by other artists in thread. The subtitle tells you what the book is providing - both techniques and inspiration.

LOL. I bought this book to help learn freestyle machine embroider. Then graduated to an embroidery machine! Never mind though, because art forms can be combined to create a unique work of art.

This book is great- kind of daunting for a newbie but I will refer to it many times for inspiration and technique.

Great ideas on how to create wonderful surface designs on fabric.Great for thread painting.Would recommend.

There are two types of CNE students in this world: Those that love this book and those that loathe it. I was severely disappointed to find that, although the cover of the book tells you that the official Novell courses are inside, they're not in any specific order! I don't know about the rest of you, but I take one test at a time...and that's how I'd like to study for them. There's an index at the back that tells you which pages to read to follow Novell's cirriculum for a specific course, but it's 10 pages here, 5 pages there, 2 or 3 pages here, 30 pages there...on and on and the the material may span 1000 pages or more. I don't understand the thinking when putting this book together. I bought it at another store and returned it. My time is too valuable than to subject myself to this.

Like many other reviewers here, I found all the irrelevant junk Mr Clarke filled his pages with to be distracting and irritating. The only reason I bought it was that I picked it up... at a discount book store. I still think I wasted my money. And I should have known better because his CNA Study Guide is just as bad.The cover says it comes with THE Clarke Test (emphasis mine) and the text in the book describes the full version. But the software you get is actually nothing more than a demo. You have to read the fine print hidden around the edge of the CD to know this before purchasing.I think this book is a waste of time and a rip-off. I would demand my money back from Mr. Clarke himself if I thought I could get it. Whatever you do, never buy any books by this man.

...than wade through this book again. The biggest problem with this book is its utter lack of focus. The book is about a distinct, highly technical subject and yet the author subjects the reader to constant barrages of pointless quotations, humorless jokes, entire pages of brainteasers and puzzles that are only marginally applicable to anything in the text, yet all of which manage to break up and confuse the text. You could shave a solid hundred pages off the book and still have a book that better prepares you for your CNE exams than this one does in its current form. All of this, and the included software bites!

I'm currently using this book in a 7 month CNE course and have read almost every page--twice. Clarke's style is engaging and encouraging for the novice but he's not for everyone. He succeeds in making a highly technical subject lively reading. Alas, CNE initiates must also internalize this material for Novell's exam and their careers' sake. That's where the tradeoff comes in: lively reading for organization. Outlining Clarke has been the only way for me to organize and learn this material for the exam. Organization is sacrificed for cleverness however and the book really needs a seasoned editor to help organize it. There's also the usual bushel-basket of typos and grammatical mistakes found in computer books. But otherwise a fine way to study for the exams.

The good things about this book is that it has all the material the four CNE courses in one book. However, it's difficult to use this book to prepare for the CNE test due to the way this book is organised. Rather, if one can read this book from the beginning until the end, he/she is definately going to be better in handling Intranet design and implementation is a effective way.The imperfect being no "Building Intranet With IntranetWare" section in this book making it imperfect as a complete guide for CNE course. Also, the CD that come with this book is defective and until now I still haven't got back my replacemenet

Just finished a LAN Class, where I had to buy books on NT, Cisco, MS-DOS and Novell. Got through all the other books with no problem. Then my instructor saved the best (worst) for last. I get nauseated trying to learn anything from the text in this book. I can stand to read about two pages in a row at any given time and then I have to close it and take a break. Today is my last day of class and I haven't finished this book yet and don't believe I will. The only good thing about it is that it is very thick and dense and will make a nice backstop when I go to the pistol range and shoot it full of holes.

All knowledge this book offers is well hidden behind all those jokes and "zen" things. It's a good book for people who want to train how to distinguish between useful and useless information.Very low information/page ratio.

By far, Theroux's best travel book. And they're all, at a minimum, extremely worth my time. What made this one exceptional was the timing of the read. I had held back on Dark Star Safari until 2018 after overdosing on other Theroux titles and feeling the need to sample other writers (many of them cited in Theroux's own works). His thesis - that Africa is doomed barring a miracle (sorry, Paul, that thought may be anathema) gains even more credence with me nearly two decades after Theroux journeyed from Cairo to Capetown, for this year has seen a spike in African strongmen rigging the game to stay in power and some economies struggling to diversify after the single-commodity free-falls of several years back. Local decision-making with roots in tribal governance, versus central government planning and concomitant shenanigans, seems to work best, the author suggests. And as an investor in a Sub-Saharan mutual fund, it's clear after reading this book that both Commerce Department analyses and investment come-ons remain woefully rose-colored. So Theroux, yet again, scores high marks for a very clear-eyed and sober approach to some very complex subject matter.Beyond the author's mastery of material (he has done plenty of homework and enjoys numerous contacts on the continent), Theroux's chops as an on-the-ground, sometimes in-your-face journalist, his disdain for "suffering fools gladly" and his ability to craft compelling mise-en-scene makes his work soar. The first 100 or so pages of Dark Star Safari are simply a delight to read, and as he moves down the spine of Africa his portraits of merchants, farmers, bureaucrats and fellow travelers prove deep and telling and sometimes just rollicking fun. Theroux has come light years from the work that made him famous, The Great Railway Bazaar, and what once amounted to caricatures in some cases are now real, live human beings that Theroux befriends and respects. (Having said that, "Bazaar" is still one of my favorite books.)Another great man of letters, Tom Wolfe, died this week. Reading his obituary, I realized for the first time that Theroux was one of the early proponents of The New Journalism that Wolfe helped found: painstaking attention to journalistic detail, no-holds-barred first-person narrative, and a unique, sometimes eye-popping way with the language that quickly drew lifelong fans. Here's hoping that Mr. Theroux, now pushing 80, isn't finished writing.

I admire the author who took this most taxing trip at the age of sixty from Cairo to Cape Town in early 2001Vivid descriptions of places and people I will never experience with controversial and unfortunately repetitive opinions about aid workers and put downs of tourists, probably most of his readersI tend to believe him about aid workers because I've met a few back home living very well and resent him about tourists because I am one, plus he ends his book going on a five trophy safari himself so hypocrisy is not a fault he avoidsHowever accurate his depiction of aid workers in their brand new range rovers is, it is hard to believe they are the cause of African poverty and corruption and he ends with a glowing description of South Africa that would more logically lead you to conclude that blacks are the problem and they should have kept whites in charge

Wow, this book is detailed down to the smells, bad food, and child beggar descriptors that only dire poverty can invoke. Lots of repetition, but that’s only because from country to country the author observed the same situations. His interviews with a wide wide range of people was fascinating, whether farmers, heads of state, cab drivers or charity donors. Worth the read, but one has to be willing to hang in there until the end...which seems as slow as a “chicken bus!”

A brilliant travelogue with astute, descriptive accounts of places visited and persons encountered. Theroux' insights are sometimes jarring, always keen and many times painfully honest. He does have an ax to grind with church-going Africans and missionaries who visit them and in those contexts, he betrays a missionary zeal of his own that he oddly enough seems completely unaware of. The book is 150 pages too long--we really did not have to travel back to Mozambique one more time after having gotten to Cape Town. I deeply enjoyed this read and having its sequel, The Last Train to Zona Verde, provides access to Africa that most of us will never have. As well, his willingness to critique the party line of foreign Aid and cultural-political b.s. propels the reader into a multi-level dialogue with the many and varied aspects of the continent. This is not just a ride down the Nile sipping wine. This is a full engagement, a long and I would say loving quarrel with a land that captured his heart and mind decades ago as a Peace Corps worker.
