I finished this book last night, Dec. 14, 2016. I found this book very good. It apparently is very well researched. The Bibliography is extensive. The author wends an excellent tale of this individual. You do not know if Tom Horn started out life as a person apart from society but that is where he ended. In some reports Horn was called a gunfighter, this he was not. No doubt a killer, but only from a distance. His service in "the Apache Wars" was probably a turning point in his life. Here he met and studied under Al Sieber. Sieber was ruthless. Killing Apaches was a way of life to them. This way of life transferred to his, Horns, life in Wyoming and Colorado. As to whether or not Horn killed the individual that he was executed for is still up in the air. Evidence admitted in his trial in 1903 would no longer be admitted in evidence. If horn did not kill that individual he should have been executed for killings he committed but never pinned on him. He probably was what we would now call a sociopath. .
Finally someone has written THE book on Tom Horn. Up until now all books on the infamous Tom Horn have been slanted, self-serving, incomplete, or total fiction. This book is well-research history. Anyone trying to write a more complete and objective history of Tom Horn is wasting their time. One of Tom Horn's victims was Isom Dart. Anyone interested in this era may want to check out "Isom Dart and an Assortment of Scoundrels" by Dell Isham.
Although I have not written a review for some time, I must recommend “Tom Horn in Life and Legend.†Larry Ball does a superb job bringing Tom Horn’s life story together for people like us who love 19th Century Western Americana.Beside the abundance of outstanding research, the part of this book that was the most important to me was how Ball portrayed Horn in the Apache wars. Unlike other books on Geronimo, Ball gives more mention to Horn and his role in chasing the Apaches. It seems to me that other authors may stray from discussing Horn’s part in the Apache Wars due to his self-promoting book, “Life of Tom Horn: Government Scout and Interpreter.†Yes, he was full of himself and a teller of tall tales, but I appreciate how Ball gave more mention to Horn’s involvement.The chapters on Horn in Arizona chasing Geronimo and as a hired assassin in Wyoming are great. The chapters on the trial are a bit long but very interesting.Simply stated, I have always been a fan of Tom Horn’s adventurous life in the West; a packer, cowboy, scout, interpreter, Pinkerton Detective, and hired assassin. In my opinion, this should be the number one book on Tom Horn as it depicts the West at its best.
Fully annotated - with a very healthy dose of footnotes, a large bibliography, and an amazing index - this exceptional biography of a Western legend is definitely not your average "Zane Grey" tale. The author gets right into just who Tom Horn was and, possibly, how he developed into the legend he remains.This is not a view of its subject from a single view point. Very good reading. Well written narrative about one of the more interesting characters of the American West in the last half of the nineteenth century. His story is much more than one death and his conviction. He was very much part of some very important events in western history. There are dark holes along the way that you would wish were filled in. I recommend this biography.
With this latest biography on Tom Horn, Larry D. Ball reminds us that he is one of the finest historians of law and order in the American West. Excellent writing and research, and long overdue.
What a well researched book. Leaves no doubt what kind of man Tom Horn really was. I don't like to pay full price for hardcovers but this book was worth the money.
An excellent history of Tom Horn by a historian without an axe to grind. Should be read along with "The Trial of Tom Horn" by John W. Davis.
