Who Was Galileo?     August 1609. Padua, Italy.   It was a bright, starry night. A scientist named Galileo walked outside to his back garden. He carried a new telescope that he’d made himself. For weeks, Galileo had been carefully grinding the lenses. Now his telescope could enlarge objects many times their size.   Galileo pointed the telescope upward. Dazzling sights leaped into view—sights no one had ever seen. How could they? These sights were not visible to the naked eye. Over the next few weeks, Galileo roamed the heavens with his telescope. What he saw amazed him. Mountains rose up from the moon’s surface! New stars took form from fuzzy patches in the sky! Moons circled Jupiter!   Yet Galileo’s discoveries led him into trouble. Terrible trouble. What he saw convinced him that the sun was the center of the universe—not the Earth. In 1609 this was a strange idea. For thousands of years, people thought that the sun and all the planets circled Earth once a day. The Catholic church held this belief as well.   When Galileo lived, the church was very powerful in Italy. It had its own court, called the Inquisition. The Inquisition could arrest and try heretics—anyone who spoke against the church’s teachings. Heretics were sometimes tortured, even killed.   Galileo was torn. He himself was a faithful Catholic who honored church teachings. Yet his own eyes pointed him to a different truth.   This truth would put his life at stake.     Chapter 1: Boyhood     On February 15, 1564, Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy. His full name had a musical ring: Galileo Galilei (gal-uh-LAY-oh gal-uh-LAY). Yet the great scientist became known by just his first name. Italy honored its most famous citizens that way, including the painter Michelangelo. Even books by Galileo were printed without his last name. And today, encyclopedias list him simply as Galileo.   He was born into an exciting age known as the Renaissance. Discovery was in the air. Europe was exploding with a renewed interest in the arts and science. In 1564 the English writer William Shakespeare was born, and Michelangelo died. Both men, along with Galileo, went down in history as geniuses of the Renaissance.   The printing press, invented in 1454, allowed books to be mass-produced instead of being copied by hand, one by one. With more books, more people began to read.   Artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci created beautiful paintings, sculpture, and architecture. With improved seagoing instruments, explorers bravely set sail for uncharted lands.   Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World of the Americas in 1492. Ferdinand Magellan’s crew sailed around the globe, returning in 1522. And in 1607, when Galileo was forty-three, settlers arrived in Jamestown and founded one of the first English settlements in North America.   Pisa was a beautiful old city by the River Arno. Its cathedral was already five centuries old when Galileo was born. Pisa’s most famous landmark stood—or rather, tilted—beside the cathedral. It was called the Leaning Tower because it looked ready to topple at any moment.   Galileo was the firstborn child. His mother and father both came from noble Italian families. However, that didn’t mean the couple was wealthy. Galileo’s father, Vincenzio, worked hard as a musician. He sang, played the lute, wrote songs, and taught.   Vincenzio also wrote books about music theory. His books stirred up trouble. Songwriters were supposed to follow strict rules for composing. But Vincenzio questioned the rules. He even added notes to the scale!   Old masters tried to stop one of his books from being published. Vincenzio, however, was able to push it into print. “I . . . wish to be allowed freely to question . . . in search of truth,” he said. Young Galileo listened carefully. Years later, he would be bold and outspoken, too.   Even as a boy, Galileo was gifted. His curiosity had no limits. He took apart machines to see how they worked. And he invented clever little toys and moving gadgets of his own.   Galileo also spent hours and hours learning music and drawing. His father taught him to play the lute. This stringed instrument was as popular then as guitars are now. Playing the lute became a lifelong passion for Galileo. From tutors, he learned to draw in perspective, which meant things looked as if they were in three-dimensional space. He practiced drawing objects and scenes until they looked perfectly lifelike. Years later, Galileo’s art skills would come in very handy.   When Galileo was eight, his family moved to Florence. Vincenzio had a wonderful new job playing music at the royal court. Galileo remained in Pisa to study with tutors, and then he joined the rest of his family.   Florence was a thrilling place to live. During the Renaissance, the city was a center for learning and the arts. It was the capital city of an area called Tuscany. Vincenzio’s job at the palace let the family mingle with dukes and princes.   At age eleven, Galileo was sent to a monastery to begin school. There the Catholic monks taught him everything an educated person of the 1500s needed to know. Galileo learned the Greek and Latin languages. And he studied the ancient subject of logic, learning how to break down and solve complex problems in an orderly way.   Galileo also studied religion. It interested him so much that he decided to become a monk. The idea horrified his father. As the oldest son, Galileo was expected to support his family one day. A poor monk couldn’t do that. Vincenzio quickly withdrew Galileo from the monastery. After that, Galileo lived at home and studied at a nearby school.   At seventeen, Galileo was ready for university. Back then, very few young men had the chance to attend one. Only the sons of rich or noble families could usually afford to go. (Girls were not allowed to enter.) But Vincenzio was determined to give his smart son the best education possible.

My son is reading this book for a book report on an inventor. He loves it and is learning so much. This book excites him which makes me happy because He is always saying how much he hates reading.

My first grader loves these books, and the series covers interesting people from all over the spectrum of history. She has quite a collection going and we plan to buy tons more.We got the Gallileo book because she loves space. She is a pretty advanced reader for her age, and I would say this one is a bit of a harder and more complex read than say the Abraham Lincoln book, which she found more relatable and was generally a faster book to finish.This is a deep and well written story however, and has introduced her to all sorts of new people she can obsess over, such as all the Greek philosophers that inspired Gallileo, and other things that were going on in history in his lifetime.We read out of this book each night for 15 minutes, which is about a chapter a night. I listen to my daughter read it and help her with some of the hard words. The story is pretty detailed and I think she has gotten a real sense of satisfaction out of it, now since we are on the last chapter. She might not be absorbing everything they are saying, such as the Catholics vs Protestants, and the push back he got from the Catholic Church despite being a devout follower, however it offers her just enough of a challenge with hard words that she is definitely improving her vocabulary and it is helping her reading aloud.

This would be a great read aloud for any classroom or at home! We read it together as a family (12 year old boy/girl twins and a 10 year old). Everyone was interested, and it led to a lot of discussions. Loved it!

My boys ages 8 & 12 really enjoyed this book. We read it as a part of a space unit study a few weeks ago. They still talk about it and test out his theories on a regular basis. It had enough information to be educational but not dry and boring.

This is a good, brief, readable biography of one of the most important figures in the history of science. Children grade 4 and up should be able to handle it. I also recommend it for a busy adult—in a quick read, the book provides more than enough information to appreciate the impact Galileo had on human scientific progress.

We (children and parents) find these books absolutely fascinating. If adults want a quick snapshot of these famous people, we highly recommend these fun books!

We own twenty books from this series and this has been one of our family’s favorites!

My composite was 96 percentile.the break down:Bio:96Chem:98Reading:34Math:99As a non-native speaker, it was impossible for me to improve my reading over a short period of time, so I gave up. I'm sure you guys can do better than me in this section. Fortunately most pharmacy schools only require a minimum score of 20 in reading section.Talking about the book, I have to say kaplan PCAT is a must buy. Frankly speaking, everything on this book can possibly be in the PCAT exam. However, THIS BOOK DOES NOT COVER EVERYTHING IN THE EXAM, which means you have to buy something else or search online for those info. (for example the 4+2 and 2+2 reaction in organic chemistry are not mentioned in the book).Many people have problems on math section, and complain the book for not providing enough info. The book is actually very informative, but the review questions are no where near the question types in the PCAT exam. The PCAT math is very very tricky. It does not test your ability to solve problems, it actually tests your ability to estimate the range of the solution and pick the right answer as fast as possible. Of course you have to know everything on this book, but if you really want to experience how the real test feels like, buy the official practice test from pearson.Last thing I want to talk about is the online practice coming with this book. They do provide a good simulation of the test environment. Maybe the reading section is good, I don't know because I have never been an expert of English. The difficulty of the practice does not match the real exam. So if you get a poor score don't worry, it doesn't matter. I used Dr. Collins' material for practice most of the time. Be sure to buy the update as well.Overall, considering that this book is only ~$30 bucks, I highly recommend you guys to buy this book.Hope you guys do well in the PCAT. At first I didn't know if this was even worth it, but the practice tests alone make this a necessity! Helped me to do very well with only a short amount of time to prep.

This book has a lot of information. I bought it mainly just to review the biology section as what many people suggested. However, the amount of information was overly detailed and unnecessary. It actually made me a lot more anxious studying this book because I felt so underprepared having to memorize so much information. In my opinion, it didn't really help me as much compared to Dr. Collins, which helped me scored a composite of 95. I believe the best way to prepare for PCAT is through practice exams, and Kaplan didn't give me enough practice questions that are relevant to the actual PCAT. I would not recommend.

This is the EXACT same book as the previous year. The practice tests are even the same. Do yourself a favor and buy last years for cheaper. Besides that, it did really help me study. The tips for each section helped tremendously

My kid got a 91 composite score on the PCAT. I am not saying buy this book and you will get a 91 since my son does well in school (3.5 GPA at UTD) and studied very hard all summer for the PCAT. What I can say is that he spent a lot of time studying his college organic chemistry book and used this PCAT book. Using this PCAT book definitely did not hurt him.

The chemistry on here was harder than on the actual pcat (don't remember exactly since it was a while ago). But it was helpful, along with Barron's for lots of practice questions. I got 92 percentile because of practicing the questions. There's also an extra practice live exam kaplan offers along with the subscription which was good practice for the test.

The book is concise and tells you exactly what you need to know to do well, but it does not have all the information necessary to truly ace the PCAT. I would use this book with other study materials. The online practice tests are very useful though because they give you a sample of what the timed test conditions will be like.

I used this and did very decently on the PCAT. Helped a lot with the writing section! Would definitely recommend. DEFINITELY. The 2 practice PCATS helped A LOT. From pharmacy student to other pharmacy students looking at this review, I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.

YES! YES! YES! I got my ending. I’m flitting around the house excited and happy as a blue jay, shouting “Five stars! Five stars!”The first half of this book felt sad to me. Maybe because I knew it was the final book in the series and no one seemed to be heading for the happily-ever-after I wanted them to have. Things were really stressed between a lot of the characters and I was feeling very frustrated with them. As it turns out, that’s exactly what I was supposed to be feeling. (Well done Kaitlyn Oruska.) I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just say I think Lainey made the best decision in her life by doing what she did at that point.The story was smooth sailing after that. I really enjoyed reading this from the different POV’s. It gave me a great insight into what Adam and Declan were going through. I really grew to appreciate how mature and level headed Declan was. Especially in a certain scene where Adam wasn’t so happy with him. Reading his POV gave me the feeling of peace, even when everything else was crazy.As this series comes to a close, I just want to say that I have loved the journey. Not only have I seen Lainey grow and change into a woman who knows what she wants, I have seen Kaitlyn Oruska grow and develop as a writer. I’m so proud of her, and so glad I stumbled upon her first book. It’s been quite a ride. I can’t wait to read her Haven epilogue novella, Endless, and find out how all my friends are doing.There were a lot of really thought provoking lines in this book, but my favorite is this:“The hardest part about falling in love is that it really is like falling and most of the time you have no idea where you’re going to land.”

I was lucky enough to be a Beta reader for this book. I love the character development that took place in all of the books. The main characters were not perfect they made mistakes but they moved on, grew up and I loved where they ended up.I love Kaitlyn's writing style it flows very well and I think she is a wonderful author and I can't wait to read her next book.Make sure you read all 4 books so you can see how far the characters all came and you will fall in love with Haven and Lainey & Adam & Harper & Declan like I did.

Started Reading this series with my teen age grand daughter this summer:)It was cool. Lots of discussions about the various characters and opinions.Volume 1 "The consequences of forever" starts out with the main characters being two teenage girls, and what else "BOYS" and "LOVE". We so enjoyed the anticipation of what will happen next and the following of the characters as they mature.It is clean and crisp reading, addressing real life, "growing up" issues for both boy and girl, and man and wife.Recommend for young at heart readers.Easy reading.

This is my absolute favorite series. I wish it didn't have to end. Adam and Lainey grew so much through the series, especially him. I loved who he became and the person he turned into. This is a must read, all 5 of the books.

True love and heartbreak made this book an amazing read. All characters . I liked except Maggie and Hannah I just couldn't like or agree with her at all.

Pretty boring and had to stop reading the series at this book because it wasn't as good as the previous ones.

Bought this to give as a gift with the Safari Insect TOOB toys. It was a hit. The Grandmother and parents have been looking for ways to make reading more fun for this 3 year old. They said this was a hit.

We purchased this for our toddler since he loves bugs. It's been a year since we purchased it is still in great shape... even after being slept with a few times. The pictures are great and realistic. And the poem that goes with the pics is great for toddlers. Glad we got it :)

My 5yr old loves reading this. However it’s very flimsy and hard for a kid to hold-especially as big as it is. It might as well be a magazine. It arrived bent and twisted:-/I’m going to have to laminate the cover.

Bought this for my son who is obsessed with bugs and he LOVES it! We read at least a few pages everyday and my son's bug knowledge is growing. He remembers the "fun facts" on each page for the different bugs and it's also helping him learn the alphabet in a fun way. He shares his bug facts with anyone who will listen and when they question him, he pulls out this book and shows them!

This book is wonderful for little kids. It's full of color and simple facts. Great way for young kids to learn about new species of bugs and learn more about ones they may already be familiar with. Each insect has a fact about it on the pages. It's in alphabetical order, so it also helps kids focus on learning the alphabet as well.

I would have loved to give it 5 star the book is so good. Short and sweet information on each bug. My toddler loved it.But it was so dirty. It was torn and bent on the cover page
