One of the pleasantries of my work is the task I have of monitoring news channels for any world events that could conceivably have an impact on governments or human health and happiness. Thus, the reason for my being a captive audience as Greta Van Susteren and her talking-head cronies haggle over the latest non-news debacle...drum roll please!... the evil Miss California – the Miss America runner up who had the nerve to speak her mind on... gasp, gasp!... marriage. Folks, she actually had the nerve to say she believed this sacred union should be between a MAN AND A WOMAN! How dare her!
Well, you know, I really do have a hard time taking these beauty pageants seriously in the first place. An event that demands credibility but still has young ladies bouncing across the stage in bikinis, has a ways to go in this world where women are still smacking their pretty heads on that bothersome glass ceiling. But the winner does walk away with some nice cash prizes and scholarships that would make any pageant parents proud to have their daughters compete!
So, this pretty young girl from sunny California, after changing out of her bikini and into something a bit more formal and comfy – her evening gown, sauntered onto the stage to receive her fair share of abuse and hopefully win the prize. It was the question and answer phase of the contest and she drew a hot-button question that ironically had to do with gay marriage (her being from the Prop. 8 state). At least one judge in the audience claimed to be gay.
I have a daughter that is very close to the same age as the pretty Miss California. I labored for years to teach my precious and only daughter to speak her mind and hold true to her own convictions and moral values no matter who is there to chide, challenge, ridicule, and buffet. Like my own daughter when she holds true to her convictions, I was proud as Miss California spoke her mind and stated her own view on a politically charged issue – an issue that assuredly lost her the Miss America crown.
I applaud this brazen young woman and am elated that there is one more heroine I and others can point to as a standard of integrity and strong values in this chaotic wasteland of political correctness and liberal grandstanding. To hell with all the naysayers who abhor conservative moral values and wail and gnash their teeth at any who oppose or speak out against them. It is just refreshing to see someone un-afraid to stand for something…
