About the Author
Elizabeth Raum has written over two-dozen nonfiction books for young readers, including a biography of Louis Armstrong for Capstone Press. Over the years, she has worked as a middle school and high school English teacher, an elementary school librarian, and a college library director. I got this for my six-year-old, who reads at an advanced level and is pretty bored with, say, ninjago and magic tree house.The problem we have is getting him good material that is still *age* and *maturity level* appropriate, and boy does this fall into that. The book is great: Choose your person, choose his/her actions, and they are all very reasonable. Tough stuff, it's a war, but fine.Right up until the boy gets caught, stripped, tied to the mast of a ship, whipped, description of back striped, his blood running and mixing with water on the deck, and he gets dragged off by his friends but dies of an infection. AWESOME, that's not something he's going to read before bed anytime soon without having nightmares.So, if you have a mature kid that doesn't nightmare, it's great. If you're thinking a younger/sensitive one can handle it ... read the whole thing first. The opening pages look fine, but it turns more graphic/mature further in.
Perfect for my 5th Grade Social Studies standards, along with 2nd Person Point of View Reading standards. The students loved reading this type of writing while learning about history!
I ordered several of these books for my son for Christmas. He's 11 and it's hard to get him to read. He had a WWII choose your story book and loved it.
My 4th graders adored this. Bought a few copies and it was constantly being borrowed to read independently while we were in this topic during SS. They particularly enjoyed the "Choose your own Adventure" idea in a book!
We have just completed the Revolutionary War and this served as an interesting review since the children could pick where they wanted to be and what they would be doing throughout the story. The interaction kept their attention. I didn't want to spoil it by telling them they were learning something.
My kids love!!!!! Would love to earn a grant for a class set! So many opportunities...
I liked the fact that you could choose what you wanted to do, even if you ended up dying. I would recommend this for kids ages 6+. I also liked it had real facts, as if a normal book, but choosing your path.
