This book is a delight. Exhaustively researched and hilariously charming, it holds the talent and genius of the Kids in the Hall in awe and reverence while simultaneously humanizing them and presenting them as real, living and breathing people who could easily have grown up down the street from you. The book is structured as a mating of a biography and an oral history, detailing their lives and journey from an omniscient narrator's POV that's frequently interspersed with quotes and anecdotes from the Kids themselves and the many people who knew them or were influenced by them. The format is excellent and it keeps the reader turning the pages long after they should have gone to bed.Reading about their early years is a treat for any fan of pop culture history, as they worked and interacted with a veritable who's-who of the Canadian and American comedy scenes of the 1980s, a time when many of today's legends were only just finding their feet on the stand-up and improv circuits. There's almost a Forrest Gump-type aura in that regard.I'm old enough to remember sitting around with my family and watching new episodes of the show on CBC back in '94 and '95, and it's always held a special place in my heart as the funniest and most brilliant piece of entertainment that Canada has ever produced. The Kids' story is raw, brave, emotional, and gripping, and they held none of it back from Paul Myers as he wrote this book. Any and every fan of them should buy it and read about their demons, their joys, their successes, their heartbreaks, and their rightful place in the annals of comedy history.
I am a huge fan of KITH and watched their show religiously on HBO for 3 seasons...When the show ended I thought that was the end of KITH but I was wrong, they continued on but I just didn't know it...I'm so glad I got this book!!! it is extremely insightful,pure genius...KITH weren't just funny,they never shied away from serious issues which was reflected in their sketches/writing but managed to use those issues to fuel their brand of humor... For me they are an acquired taste, most of their stuff can't be done today so I feel fortunate to have caught them in the early stages...I highly recommend reading the book...
This was an excellent read! Very informative and honest. I think the Kids in the Hall are the most prolific sketch comedy group of all time (20 episodes a season for 5 seasons!). I've been lucky enough to meet all of the kids and they were all pleasant, engaging and funny- as is this book.
This book is so fun! Paul Myers knew the Kids back when, and has some great insights into what makes the KITH tick. This book traces how they came together and stuck together, with stories of how some of my favorite sketches were developed. I now have a list of performances I want to find on someone's old VHS tapes....
Paul Myers is an excellent writer. I highly recommend you buy this. Especially if you’re a Kids in the Hall fan. It is a necessary additive to one’s collection.
A great book that tells the story of the Kids In The Hall. The highs and lows and in-betweens are revealed in Paul Myers’ latest book. I learned all I wanted to know about those Kids... and more. An excellent read.
