I'm a licensed clinical social worker, and I have been a school adjustment counselor for over 15 years. Over time, certain skills become honed, but you also start to stagnate in other areas. I was finding that I was doing very well getting kids to open up and talk to me about their lives, but I was feeling like we were not progressing quickly toward making positive changes. This book has really helped me tap into students' own desires to set goals for themselves and to actually make changes! By utilizing the strategies in this book, I have helped high school kids do the following: figure out how to move on after a breakup, work on resolving the constant arguing between a student and her parent, work through complicated feelings following a parent's death, figure out how to start budgeting so they can move out after graduation, change sleeping habits so a student stops missing the first two hours of school every day, and more. I definitely recommend this book!

I have been wanting to learn more about MI but everything out there has felt complicated and wordy. Your experience helps this book to take a different and refreshing approach. I highly recommend this book for any school counselor, school psychologist or school social worker looking for effective, evidence-based approaches to helping adolescents with academic, attendance, behavioral, substance abuse and/or other challenges. It is obvious that the author has a deep understanding of and expertise in using Motivational Interviewing (MI) in his own school-based practice--to great effect. I also very much enjoyed his clear and lively writing style. His inclusion of ample Counselor-Student dialogues clearly illustrates both the spirit and techniques of MI.At least one other reviewer suggested reading this book as a refresher if you've read others about MI. I would add that this book is also an excellent place to start!
This book is amazing! It is straight-forward, and at the end of every chapter there are a couple of simple suggestions for how to apply that chapter's teaching to your practice. I read one chapter per week during my internship (I am getting my Master's in Social Work), and learned how to use MI in my client interventions. I have bought extra copies to share - my mom is a 7th grade science teacher and loved getting to apply these ideas to her everyday interactions with students! If you're a school counselor OR just work with children, don't hesitate to add this short but important guide to your library - you won't regret it!
Wow!! This book is amazing, in a very short and small application I have seen improvements in students!! Wellworth the read especially if you're a school counselor. Im actually reading it for the third time to get a better grasp and feel more natural. :) thank you!
For the person who gave the book a 2 star. Really....the information was very informative and concise. It was a really easy read, that was not long winded. The author did not come across as a "know it all" but, to me rather compassionate about his work. It was refreshing to see someone worry more about others(students) then themselves. I have been to workshops about MI and read books from Dr. Miller and other authors. This book seemed to me more like "cliff notes" for MI. I believe he kept it simple, so counselors could relate to teenagers in their stressful world.
This book is great for school counselors or life coaches. These 7 chapters give valuable iand knowledgeable information on motivational interviewing.
A GREAT READ FOR ANYONE who deals with teens! I am not a counselor or a teacher, but I found this book to be an easy read with LOTS of helpful hints and information. THANKS for such an easy-to-understand book!
