This book was a very big let down and I love the Mr.Pipes series. I could not believe how the author never ever mentioned the most famous hymn writers born and raised in America. With the other series the author did a wonderful job at telling the life and times of foreign hymn writers; but he never went into detail about any of the American hymn writers that were mentioned in this book.Fanny Crosby was one of the most glorious hymn writers this country ever had and wrote over six thousand hymns in her life time. and she wrote them all being blind. She wrote; Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior, Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross and Jesus Is Calling and many more that are still being sung today in our churches. Also, Philip Bliss was another famous hymn writer and he was never mentioned. He wrote; Almost Persuaded, Dare To Be a Daniel, and It is Well With My Soul, but here again...never mentioned.Even the hymn writers that were mentioned, their lives were barley touched on and of one; he was put down with the hymn he wrote, which is; In the Garden...which, by the way, is one of my all time favorite hymns.So, if you want to take my opinion about this book you can, of course. But if you buy this book I am sure you'll agree.
We love the Mr. Pipes books. I wish they had a version with the hymns on a CD. I downloaded a lot of the hymns in iTunes!
This book flies "over the head" of most children and is incapable of holding a child's interest. I chucked it for kids--may be o.k. for someone really interested in the OLD ENGLISH (from Great Britain) hymns.
The third in the Mr. Pipes series can only improve upon the first two. Mr. Pipes travels to New England with Dr. Dudley to see a few historic sites with Drew and Annie before heading to the west coast to spend Christmas with their parents. The humor that amused the readers in the first two books hasn't disappeared, nor has Dr. Dudley's disdain for things not British or his overbearing concern for Mr. Pipes' health. The storyline is just as charming, and children will read it for the mere pleasure of it.However, the main ideas that are constantly reinforced are Godly behavior, understanding and sharing the Bible, contrasting good hymnody and shallow songs, appropriate music, poetry, great men of faith, and doctrine. Mr. Pipes teaches an excellent course on great Church hymnody effortlessly and very enjoyably to all readers. Highly to be recommended!
Mr. Pipes, along with very British Dr. Dudley, travels to America to visit his friends, siblings Anna and Drew, for the Christmas holidays. While there, the children and men visit many historical sites as Mr. Pipes teaches them about ten different historical American hymn writers.While Dr. Dudley is fantastic in this book (so much fin), the sections about the hymn writers themselves I found dryer than in the previous books. Though I do not agree with all of Mr. Pipes' statements and conclusions, I have benefited from their thought-provoking discussions and the beautiful, godly poems.I do not recommend giving this book to children to read to themselves, but it has done very well as a read-aloud for my whole family.
