Too often the Pacific war credit is merely divided up between the Marines with their many admirers (and very efficient PR machine) on one hand and McArthur personally on the other. Leyte, in many ways the pivotal battle that finally and irrevocably broke the remaining Japanese strength, was almost completely an Army operation, yet while McArthur as always tried to take for himself sole credit, here he was upstaged by the incredible last stand of destroyers and jeep escort carriers in turning back the considerable remaining Japanese naval strength. The net result was that generals like Krueger got their customary pittance of a much smaller pool of media attention. This book goes a long way toward righting that wrong. Even more, while generously lauding General Krueger's leadership, it also shines the spotlight on deserving soldiers all the way down to buck privates. Often in war, accomplishing a task is largely due to one soldier, who may not be in even a junior NCO leadership position before rising to the occasion and taking a position, spearheading an advance, or saving his fellows. Bravo for that.Beyond the facts, even though I love reading about the bravery of the tin can sailors, I have always wanted an in-depth account of the land battle. This book serves that purpose perfectly. I learned a great deal, having never read much about the Japanese movements or strategy or tactics, or anything like the detail of American operations given here. I highly recommend it to anyone who like me is fascinated by America's most just war or simply military operations in general.
Another extremely well written chronicle by this author of a very pivotal battle fought by the U.S. Army in the Pacific War. The land battle for Leyte, fought exclusively by the U.S. Army, is not well covered by other authors in other books. THIS is the definitive coverage of the U.S. Army's crushing defeat of the Imperial Japanese Army in a battle that the Japanese believed to be absolutely crucial in bringing the USA to the bargaining table. Their defeat on Leyte sealed the Japanese Empire's fate. This defeat meant the loss of the war for Japan.
My father fought in the sixth infantry division and was a part of this land battle. My mother and I really enjoyed this book because unlike others it dealt with the land part of the battle not just the naval part. My Dad saved his own brothers life more than once in the jungles of the Philippines. My Uncle Dee was also a true hero, carrying his Sargent out on his back when the man was wounded and Japanese soldiers were all around. He did his best to keep him quiet in spite of his injuries. They both were decorated heroes. I feel Nathan Prefer did a great job with this book by not forgetting just how essential the infantry was to being able to carry the day. If any of your family fought in this battle, or you are just a World War II buff, you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
This was a great book that I liked because of one super interesting fact. Most books about Leyte only concern themselves with the naval battle for Leyte Gulf. Not many books actually take the time to explain that there was a land battle occurring on the island.Prefer gives an excellent account with both a detailed operational history while still taking the time to explain detailed soldiers actions. To me, it was practically the equivalent of reading one of Cornelius Ryan's books on D-Day or Market Garden. He was able to allow you to follow the course of the battle with great detail and stories, but without getting bogged down with the individual stories and loosing the big picture.
Follow the battle as closely as anyone can. Would like to have seen more maps making it easier to follow the action. As it was, I had Google Earth open in another page while reading on my Kindle. As a veteran of VN, I can truly appreciate whet these troopers went through.
Now I get to read about the ground fighting. The Naval battle was bad enough, but the ground fighting showed what our fighting men were made of. Even the lowest private showed there were heroes from the bottom to the top. The military of today should read this book.
Dad was an Army Infantryman in WWII, and the campaign he and his fellow soldiers fought is very well documented in this book. Now that Parkinson's is robbing him of his memories, it's very meaningful to me to have this record of his past.
After more than 60 years the battle and the details connected with strategy on both sides have faded into dim memory even for those who were alive in 1944. Younger people in most cases never heard of the name let alone the battles and hardships suffered on both sides. This is a good book to review some of the historyof the Pacific war. It is easy to follow easy reading.
