This is an excellent book for people who are in the helping professions and want to remain energized while they are expected to give much social, emotional, and cognitive energy in their field of work. I highly recommend this as a way to stay balanced and effective when working in situations with high need populations from any social and economic communities.

If you think too much and your busy mind keeps you up at night, or if you dwell on things and can't get over them, or even if you just want your mind to be more clear, this is a great book. It has both helpful exercises and suggestions and ways of looking at things that help calm a busy mind. It is a short book but has a lot of content. I highly recommend it!

Sandra Ingerman is a key person for great wisdom. This book has so much insight it's become one of my top go-to books! Great for ideas & meditations showing how we can all take personal responsibility for our own thoughts, feelings, behavior and move out of the old paradigm ways! Great little book!

“How to Heal Toxic Thoughts” by Sandra Ingerman Like most “self-help” books the “beauty” (value) is in the eye of the beholder. The benefit here is that Ingerman does well at articulating the processes by which we can both suffer, and heal, serious emotional issues and distressing external events. That gives the reader very good and pragmatic food for thought and can help them understand their own situations in new light. Ingerman’s work can be taken piecemeal or “en toto”, whatever is the inclination of the reader. The value, again, is the call of each reader.

Rarely do I read a book, of any genre, really, but especially self help, in which every word matters. This is one such book. Ingerman accomplishes with skilled brevity sharing her own very honest experience with illness, healing, and mindset, alongside practical instructions for others to do the same. Drawing on her shamanic path and skills she delivers in this text exercises that are quite doable by anyone of any path who wishes to influence his or her own wellbeing. Ingerman carefully associates that the attentiveness one gives oneself benefits All, a principle that draws the work of this book to a strong conclusion: you cannot fail when you take care of yourself. Every little bit helps everyone. I have recommended this book to many people who deal with chronic illness or who want to become more active in their wellbeing.

This is a simple read with simple perspective learning techniques. Simple should not be confused with the POWERFUL points made by this author. These valuable insights appear to shine some light on how we approach others and even ourselves. These lessons can be easily applied to daily thought, conversation and living. Change is a process which acquires time and practice. This book gives some valuable starting points to help get those changes moving into action. If only one toxic thought or feeling is healed or at least made aware of from reading this book, than a the lesson has been learned and the rest is up to you.

This book, out of so many I am reading now, has been the most helpful in my life. The things I have been doing in life, or have allowed to be done to me, were just unnecessary. I know this now. I will re-read this book many times. My healer suggested Sandra Ingerman to me, and I have read several of her books, several of Michael Harner's books, and a few others of late. Of them all, this is the book that has been KEY to the change in my life, and consequently, how I affect those around me!

An excellent book that highlights the United States forgotten service, the U.S. Coast Guard and an amazing rescue made in the early 1950's. Well worth reading and well researched, this book belongs on the shelf of any naval historian. But, honestly, in a little biased being a former Coastie. Semper Paratus!

My dad, Fred Brown, was a survivor of the SS Pendleton. I was anxious to read this book to compare it to the stories my dad repeatedly told over the years. I was surprised to find accurate references to an unfortunate incident which claimed the life of Dad's close friend, Tiny Myers. Tiny asked my dad to take his wallet because he had a bad feeling that he would not survive. My dad refused to take it and put it back in his pocket in an effort to boost Tiny's confidence. I didn't expect that part of the story to be included in the book. There is a lot of history in the book as well which I enjoyed very much. It truly was a miracle rescue! I was only four-years-old, but I well remember how happy I was to see my dad as was told in the Portland Herald Press "Her Daddy Came Home" where my dad was pictured holding me. I gave this book 5 stars not only because of the personal connection, but because it is so-well researched, accurate and gives credit where credit is due...to those brave, selfless Coast Guard rescuers who literally put their lives on the line, and grieved the loss of Tiny Myers for the remainder of their lives. An inspiring read!!!

With "The Finest Hours" Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman have written one of the most compelling, captivating, and fast-paced accounts in the history of maritime drama. On February 18, 1952 off Cape Cod not one but two World War Two vintage oil tankers, the "Pendleton" and the "Fort Mercer," broke in two in a tremendous storm. Depending on which of the four sections of the ships people were on greatly influenced their ability to survive in the frigid Atlantic. While the premise sounds incredible enough, the heroic battle of the US Coast Guard to rescue survivors is an amazing testament to the skill and determination to those men. I was especially impressed with the actions in Bernie Webber's tiny and obsolete CG 36500 (fortunately now restored and on display in a museum) and the accounts of the crew's quiet heroism as related by the authors.This edition is for young readers, but is perfectly suitable for adults as well: the interview with the authors at the end clarifies what was removed from this version (largely technical information on the construction methods used in building oil tankers, etc.) As it is this version is eminently readable and thoroughly engrossing. Buy whichever version you prefer, but don't miss out on this incredible and incredibly well written tale of the sea.

My husband and I read this book together before going to see the movie that has arisen from it. The two -- book and movie -- are best when consumed as a package. The book is reasonably well organized, but is dealing with a time in which many actions are being taken at the same time. So its sequence of events is a little difficult to follow. However, having a pretty good idea of the truth helps when viewing the movie, which exaggerates the romance, but accurately dramatizes the actual rescues, which were amazing!

I have to confess up front, I'm a bit biased about this book. The Finest Hours is about one of the most dangerous rescue missions in the history of the U.S. Coast Guard, and I spent 13 years of active and reserve duty in the Coast Guard. Moreover, this book focuses on the exploits of four men who were members of my part of the Coast Guard—the Boat Force, those Coasties serving in small boats who "have to go out, but don't have to come back."On February 18, 1952, two WWII-era T2 oil tankers broke in half during a vicious nor'easter, leaving the surviving crewmembers trapped in the floating remains of the ships. While multiple Coast Guard vessels took part in rescuing all the survivors, The Finest Hours focuses mainly on the efforts of four young Coasties who battled the storm-tortured sea in a small 36-foot lifeboat to rescue 31 men trapped on the hulk of the tanker Pendleton.Authors Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman do an admirable job of describing the torment of the Coast Guard crew as they fought the monstrous waves battering their small, open-cockpit boat, leaving the men near hypothermic as finally neared the wreckage of the Pendleton. Even more miraculous than the fact they managed to save 31 members of the Pendleton's crew is that the Coasties managed to make it back to shore in their heavily loaded lifeboat. The rescue was evidence of masterful seamanship and courage, and all four crewmen rightfully received the Gold Lifesaving Medal, the Coast Guard's highest award for valor.As I said, I may be bias about this book. However, like many Coasties, I've spent many hours in small boats hammered by foul weather. I am thankful someone has finally recognized the courage that typifies the men and women of the United States Coast Guard

I'm retired Coast Guard. Reading this made me wish I was part of that old Guard. Modern Coast Guard doesnt hold the same reverence for life as it once did. Nowadays, you can only complete a mission if your GAR model is "green" (there is low risk to the people going out to perform the rescue). Of course I thought this was a great book! However, this book was purchased for my 10 yr. Old because it was labelled for young readers. I spent half my time explaining nautical terminology and defining big words. That takes a lot away from story enjoyment.

I find myself conflicted about Maledicte. The writing is absolutely superb, positively enthralling, but the plot is not for the faint of heart. Deep within Antyre's capital lurk two children whose entwined destinies threaten the kingdom, but most especially the very future they desire. Filled with treacherous intrigue, murderous intent, hope of new beginnings, and a vengeful goddess, Maledicte is riveting with an overwhelming sense of doom lurking within the shadows of its pages. The ending is just as surprising as each twist and turn and wholly worth the effort it takes to make it through such darkness and dread. While I cannot say I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I have begrudged it with a four star rating because of the author's skill and the satisfaction of having read a very well-told story.

While undoubtedly well written and far superior to the disappointing rubbish spattering the panorama of contemporary fantasy fiction, this debut novel is deeply and inexcusably flawed to the point I could not not only enjoy it but even finish it without forcing myself which is not exactly the effect fantasy books (and fiction in general) are supposed to engender.Maledicte, the main character and her lover Janus nearly never come to life to me: they act consistently, their set of mind is well drafted but nothing Ms Robins writes about them is able to make me forget or condone how unpleasant their motives and their actions are: throughout the novel I could feel no anxiety form them, robbers and murderers they were born and they stayed to the last page.One could say that a writer does not need to portray likeable characters nor to have the evil ones punished for their crimes, but while I admit that flawed personalities make for better character developments and that larger than life villains make for better fun, I will neither deny my personal urge to identify with the character I am supposed to read and care about.My limit, perhaps.Small compensation is that Gilly, the third main character, is finely wrought, likeable and good natured and that all side characters are not bad at all.Further than this Ms Robins has a fine sense for situation sketching.Set in the usual kingdom rotted to the core and devoid of salvation, surrounded by enemies and mined by conspirators (a XVII century England comes to mind), the novel contains many a memorable scene, sort of tableaux vivants (living pictures) sketched ably and with surprisingly deft hand: servant quarters, brothels, balls, duels, all come to life through a nice economy of words.Most scenes where characterization is attempted instead fail to attain their goal and slow the narrative to dragging halts.The writing itself is always professional, routine pages alternating with some splendidly drafted ones and a few where the attempt at fine literature turns out clumsy.While the issue of gender -a woman masking herself as a man coming to think about herself as such (and pronouns follow suit) without losing her deeper femininity- is satisfyingly dealt with, those of love, trust, friendship and supernatural are far less convincingly dealt with.Because of the constant bloodshed and the complexity of themes I would not recommend this book to teens.

Janus' girlfriend fifteen years old Miranda is appalled when her long time companion and lover is taken from her and vows to be at his side after she kills his patrician sire.Knowing a female cannot just walk about Murne by herself especially a young woman trying to move about in the upper crust circles, Miranda needs a disguise so she turns herself into a male noble and gains entrance into the home of wastrel Baron Vornatti, who detests Last. The Baron and his servant Gilly train the eager Miranda in what she needs to know about treachery amidst the debauched aristocracy. When the Black-Winged Goddess Ani completes the metamorphosis of Miranda from love sick teen to deadly avenger, the young female becomes Maledicte, whose goal remains the same with just more victims to dispatch.This is a terrific fantasy due to the powerful emotions of the lead character. The audience will follow the capers of this seemingly innocent urchin who willingly becomes an expendable pawn of the violent Goddess of Love, as the deity and the girl share the same traits of deep love and even deeper hate. The story line focuses on Miranda's obsessive efforts to be with her Janus so much so that she becomes more and less than human too achieve her goal. Readers will appreciate Lane Robins' character driven dark fantasy.Harriet Klausner

Seriously. Loved. It. The setting, the characters, the relationships, the angst, the anger, the deviousness. I loved Maledicte, that saucy lady man. The deck was already stacked in this book's favor because I tend to love any plot involving females masquerading as males, because there's so much duping and humor to be had. Miranda is just so unexpected, from her initial description through judging eyes to the immense devotion and passion she shows for Janus (whom I hated). But Gilly, thank goodness for Gilly, because Maledicte might have been intolerable without him.

This is a beautiful book from one of my favorite restaurants. If you haven't been to Gjelina (or either of its two other incarnations) in Venice, California, be sure to go if you are ever in the area. I'm especially fond of Gjelina Take Away which has great sandwiches, salads, and more. This book really captures the artisanal quality of their food. I actually bought this for my niece who is a vegetarian and there is plenty in this book for her to make for herself.

This cookbook has absolutely blown me away. The photos are spectacular and the layout is thoughtful; almost all recipes occupy one page while the facing page is the corresponding photo, making the recipes simple to follow while cooking. The writing is concise and interesting, the recipes are explicitly written, there's a substantial range of flavors and dishes covered, and most importantly - the end results are amazing. [I've posted a list of the recipes at the end of my review.]I have never been to Gjelina, nor had I even heard of it when I ordered the cookbook, but it seemed like the sort of food that I would enjoy - homemade pizza, pasta, roasted vegetables, delicious but not complicated desserts. I wasn't sure where to start, so this cookbook lay around my house for a while, but once I tried the chickpea kale stew, I was completely hooked. I cannot stop cooking dishes from this cookbook. So far, I've made the chickpea stew (it works almost as nicely with canned chickpeas if you are feeling lazy), roasted cauliflower, charred Brussels sprouts with bacon, kale-fennel salad, pomodoro sauce, pizza pomodoro, roasted chicken with braised kale, kabocha squash olive oil cake, and the show-stopping chocolate tart. Every recipe I have tried has been pure gold. I was excited just reading about this cookbook, but now that it’s here, I know I’m not going to be cooking out of it much. It’s not really a home cook’s book, unless you’re a person with a lot of time on your hands, willing to order ingredients online or do some serious hoofing to find them locally. There are some simple recipes for sides and starters, but once you hit the entrees, your ingredient list may range from 12 to 20 items. Most ingredients are accessible enough, but then there’s those ‘add a tablespoon each of tomato confit, garlic confit, and some other confit’ - each confit which requires 6 to 8 ingredients and take 45 minutes to make a cup and a half of something that will hold in your fridge for three days. And there’s the cheese you could get from the artisianal cheesemaker down the block, if you have one, or the heirloom gardener for that certain something, and the pomegranate molasses or wheat berries or…oh, hell. Where do you get this stuff?!I don’t fault the writer or recipes; they are clearly presented and executable. They do state up front that they spike their dishes with all sorts of pickled and flavor-packed confits, which is totally practical for a restaurant - not so much for my family of 3.

I'm cookbook-obsessive, and my stack from this season is literally over 2 feet high. I keep being disappointed by chef-driven books that use ridiculous ingredients in recipes that no normal person would do. Don't get me wrong, I love challenging and inspirational books, but quite frankly many of this genre of books is not inspirational because they aren't unique enough to warrant that title. But enough about the other books that I don't like.I have never heard of Gjelina and so I have never eaten there (what's up with the crazy negative review - if you want every recipe, go get a job there). The narrative was interesting and entertaining. EVERY ingredient is accessible - there are a small handful of items that are seasonal or only going to found at your better markets, but in general, you'll be able to find the stuff or get a decent substitution. The recipes are doable and well-written for the average cook, but interesting enough for all levels to find exciting. And the photography is rich and lush. Lots and lots of recipes. A well done book!

We recently moved back from LA to the East Coast (don't get me started...) and one of the things we miss most is Gjelina/Gjusta. I got this as a gift for my boyfriend, but it has really turned out to be a gift to both of us. We try to cook something from it at least once a week, and it has been so fun to recreate some of the dishes we miss the most. The photography is beautiful and the book is well written and easy to follow. Favorite so far has been the brussels sprouts with bacon and dates -- definitely put it on your "to make" list. If only it included a plane ticket back to LA and a seat on the Gjelina patio *cry face emoji*

We’ve been to the restaurant many times, and now we can replicate their dishes in our own wood fired pizza oven. The recipes are not complicated but require some planning. Everything tastes great. We are vegetarians and found a lot of great ideas.

Thank you, Bart Millard for capturing the thoughts of a child as they imagine what heaven will be like. The words are not only light-hearted and fun but they reflect the delights many children want of ginormous ice cream cones, pets and doing the canon ball jump into a lake during summer. The illustrations are also excellent. Also, the diversity of the people in the pictures conveys the truth that God's gift of salvation is free for every person on this planet to choose. Including this child's thankfulness to God that he doesn't have to wait until heaven to spend time with God is the very best part. The little boy says "You're here in my heart. You'll never leave me. You'll stay by my side!" The music by Mercy Me has helped me through some difficult health challenges and I look forward to reading this book to foster children in need of hope. Love this book!!!

Such a beautiful book with an engaging story. My little girls love it!

I gifted my 7 year old son with this book for his birthday because he loves the song and movie! I didn’t expect to get emotional but by page 5 I was bawling my eyes out! My little one is always asking what heaven is like and this was perfect for his little self! I’m 30 years old and just imagining what it will be like broke me down in the restaurant! Thank you for such an amazing book!
