At age 50 I was a certified, card-carrying carboholic. A typical lunch consisted of a bag of chips, a pack of snack crackers and either a bag of cookies or a candy bar…eaten at my desk while I watched the fitness freaks work up a sweat in the noonday sun. Needless to say, I was a type 2 diabetic by the time I reached age 55. When the doctor gave me the bad news, he said the goal of treatment was to “…make the diabetes train go slower and slower and slower…until it crashed at the end.” I didn’t like the sound of that crash.Dr. Day’s “The Longevity Plan” will tell you how to fix the tracks and add rails to the end of the line. The book tells the delightful story of the lifestyle of the centenarians of the little, remote village of Bapan, China. In the book, he walks us through seven lessons from Bapan, and gives suggestions on how to apply them to a modern western society. Each lesson is backed up with findings from scientific studies. The book is not just another diet and exercise book, although there are chapters on both topics. The book is much broader in scope, covering lifestyle issues like living in community, finding rhythm in your life, adapting to your environment and finding purpose in changing circumstances.My wife thinks I’m pretty radical about diet and exercise these days, but I tell her that Dr. Day’s zeal exceeds mine. I don’t think I’ll ever master salads for breakfast. I think I’ll keep eating the parts of the chicken found at my local grocery. (I’m not up to an offal mess yet.) And I don’t think I could handle 14 hours a day in motion.However, while some sections of the book can be intimidating, it also provides encouragement and challenge. Don’t like the Bapan diet? Find one you like and stick to it. (My own favorite is the Glycemic Index Limbo Diet. How low can you go!) Can’t be in motion 14 hours? Start by parking your car further from the office and walk up the stairs rather than take the elevator.The book left me wishing for more. Since I’d like to see the good doctor remain gainfully employed, here a couple of suggestions for the sequels.I’d love to see more details on the scientific studies associated with each of the lessons. Things like the number of subjects in the study, the length of the study, and any caveats associated with interpreting the results. What kind of epigenetic changes are associated with the lesson? What impact on cellular health or telomere length?Another sequel would be to compare the lifestyle of Bapan to other centenarian hotbeds like Acciaroli, Italy and Ikaria, Greece. Is it just lifestyle, or are there elements in the microenvironment (magnesium or manganese or calcium in the water or soil? Is it their nightly brew of Goat’s Rue tea? Or is it perhaps an undiscovered “Methuselah Gene”, the result of natural selection in these villages?) Contrasted with the centenarians of Okinawa and Loma Linda, CA, it would make for a fascinating read.At 70, I’m only at the beginning of my centenarian journey. However, the book encouraged me enough to think that I might just live long enough to attend the wedding of my youngest grandchild’s oldest child. I’d have to live to at least 105 to be there!

In a fast paced world of excessive complexity and conflicting voices and opinions, Dr. John has extracted and highlighted some key principles for long term health and happiness. The stories of centurians in China and his personal experiences with them is very engaging and the principles he highlights are both well researched and accessible. A strong voice for a more simple approach to better health, happiness and longevity. Additionally, Dr. Johns blog is one of the most valuable sources for good health advice that is not compromised by self interest. A must read for everyone seeking better quality of life.

The Longevity Plan is disarmingly simple, yet exquisitely profound. While a cardiac patient at IHC for 4 days in late June 2017, Dr. Day became my cardiologist. When he first came to my room, we spoke at length whereby he described the essence of his new book about to come off the press on July 4. At age 76 while still in the peak of good health (I thought), hadn't spent a night in a hospital since age 5 (tonsillectomy), drug free except for an occasional antibiotic, my guardian angels apparently decided an intervention was necessary and arranged for me to become a patient of Dr. Day. After 4 days, I was released June 26...escaping with my life and little or no permanent damage. The Longevity Plan, along with Dr. Day's personal assurance, has given me great hope of a full recovery and rebuilding of my heart tissue, such that I can live a long and physically active life, totally drug free. Already I have resumed playing tennis an hour and one half every day. Never have I read a book that has so dramatically changed my life and given me the hope, the pure knowledge and the very simple path to better health than I had before. The book is very easy to read and understand, yet based on the mountain of footnotes and references, is no doubt the culmination of many thousands of hours of research and studies performed by Dr. Day and his many colleagues. Thank you Dr. Day for your contribution to the better health of mankind and especially mine.

This is an excellent book. It is fun to read and very informative. It would be five star except for two minor issues I have.It is a little too confident of it's own predictions. I was very impressed with judgement of the author as to the reasons for longevity in the village. However, there were no comments about potential errors or incorrect guesses. For a subject this complex and controversial, it is unlikely that all their guesses are correct. Or maybe they missed an important element. I think the author should be a little more modest about his achievements and leave room for further study.I was personally unconvinced of their argument that exceptional genes were not a significant factor. The book causally said the villager's genes were no different than the rest of the world. That is very hard to determine and would require an extensive investigation. It is also unlikely in a small isolated village and county. This place sounds like it has not changed for millennia.

Finally, a book that puts it all together. Not a diet book, not an exercise book, and not even a lifestyle book exactly--but a tale of how one doctor transformed his life in every way that matters. Instead of feeling discouraged by reading how life is in rural China--and how far away it is from the way I live--I came away feeling empowered with concrete ways I can improve my life right where I am, because it gives realistic ways a person can adapt the lessons learned from the Longevity Village to modern American life.

Quality pages! This coloring book is a hit among my son and his friends (Ages 4-9). Big pictures make coloring easier for the kids. One downside is the pages don’t tear out easily so sometimes the pages rip. Overall, I recommend though!

It is pixilated like other techies have posted, but that doesn't matter to a 7 year old. Fun pictures that are pretty easy to color.

There are several pages in this coloring book that are repeats of previous pages, it kind of makesone feel cheated, when you have to color the same picture twice, instead of an all new picture..

The book came with a small tear on the front page close to the binding. My 7 year old has not noticed but if I were giving it as a gift I would have ordered a new one. Attached pictures show the tear and the small indent on the back. Also wanted to show the level of detail the coloring book has.

It's poor quality, I could've printed out better pictures online. Seriously

Very generic drawings. I could have drawn these myself and they would have looked better. Would not recommend.

Please forgive me for leaving only 4 STARS, while this IS A GREAT BOOK, Mr. Gillette also wrote Theatrical Design and Production: An Introduction to Scene Design and Construction, Lighting, Sound, Costume, and Makeup, that book contains many of the electrical & light tidbits of this book. BUT as wise people know, time changes things, but the past leads into the present. My wish was that I'd purchased a more recent Electric and Lighting book AND an older Theatrical Design book OR vice a versa by this author, so I could have information of the past and the present to work from.The electric systems from my 2003 version are likely to still be in use for most theaters, film studios depending on age may also have the same systems, updates like computer controls are likely also. But everything in theater as in life lives based on knowledge, skill, works, and budgets of time & money. The more knowledge a person has can guide them to more options and choices. It's probable that the older Designing with light book is most optimal for theaters, while the newer book is better for film productions.

I will start off with a quick generalization that I really liked this story. The author, Helen Brown, gives a very direct and honest portrait of her family from her time as a young mother in a struggling marriage to becoming a successful woman who finds the courage to love again in many different facets. I found myself rooting for Helen, mourning with her, and learning about people in all their flawed beauty as she did. And she's just one member of this wonderful family.Then there is the namesake of the book, and quite possibly the little monarch of the clan, Cleo. Truly something special, Cleo is always there for this family when she is needed most. As the author says, Cleo gives her son his smile back after a horrid tragedy. She is there to stave off depression for Helen in the worst of times, and she even gives a little dating guidance when the time comes. Long after Cleo gives Helen's son, Rob, his smile back, she is there to nurse him back to health when he is hit with a life threatening disease. What got to me most was Rob's dreams in which Cleo told him that she would be there to help him make friends and, much later, when he has a very prophetic dream about what she was sent to teach him in her lifetime.Overall, I got more out of this book than I expected and was very pleasantly surprised by the depth and candor the author bestows.

My son was also hit by a Blue Ford Escort when he was 9 yrs. old. He was badly injured and had to have reconstructive surgeries, skin grafts, etc., but I didn't lose him. Thank God as he is my only child. I didn't know if I could read this book after Sam was killed. I kept going and am so glad I did. I, as did Helen, end up divorced. Something like this really puts a strain on a marriage, some make it and some don't. I never remarried, but have been in a long term relationship for which I am grateful. I could identify with Helen in so many ways. Cleo was a remarkable cat, her gut instincts made things somewhat more tolerable for this family. I really liked this book, lots of inspiration, lessons to be learned, and lots of things to look at differently (as Rob) pointed out while ill. You don't have to be a cat lover to read this book, it's a great read for anybody. I hope that Helen and her family do not have to go through anymore trying times like they have in the past.

I would recommend this book to all cat lovers and anyone who does not understand what makes cat's truly special! Wonderfully written and heartwarming story!

I have to say that this was a difficult book to read. The very real pain and grief that the author endured when her oldest son was killed, is almost unbearable. I had to take it in small doses. But it is joyful fun when Helen and Rob start watching the antics of their new kitten, and learn to laugh again. I was surprised that the editors of the book had let all this raw pain and emotion stay in. But, as I said in my review of the author's second book, 'Cats and Daughters', which in part tells how the writing of 'Cleo' came about--the author had actually deleted the original material in favor of a more upbeat story. It was the editors that encouraged her to put the emotion and pain back in, which actually makes the telling of the story much more powerful. Once I got through it the first time, I re-read it again. I recommend this to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. In the end it turns out to be a story of hope and renewal and joy--carried in on little cat feet.

Love, love, love this book. Second time I've bought it (don't know where my first copy went) If you are a cat person, this book will have you bawling your eyes out, crying tears of both sadness and joy - at what a beloved pet can do in a family that is going through tragedy and broken hearts. Truly a wonderful and inspiring book

I loved this book. I like real life stories and this one captured my interest as I also love cats. Helen Brown didn't shy away from sharing the intense grief of losing a child with the world in this book and the healing that her acquisition of a kitten gave her. Being a dog person, her new kitten, chosen by the son she lost weeks before, was a challenge at first but Cleo the cat won her heart and converted the whole family into cat lovers. It might be said that only cat people could love this book, but I challenge that. The rich tapestry of personal grief mixed with feline antics means you will laugh and you will cry along with the author as her tale unfolds.I liked the book so much I bought the second novel, too - After Cleo: Came Jonah.

I seldom write reviews for books, and rarely keep them after reading them. This is a keeper. I loved this book from beginning to end. Helen Brown is an accomplished writer that relays a story well. Her story is told with feeling and insight into her life as a young wife and mother. Cleo is adorable and so easy to fall in love with, as described by the author. By the end of the tale, when you know how the story must end, you cry along with the family over the loss of the beloved pet and family member. Through the loss of her son and, eventually, her cat, Helen Brown tells how one family grows through their grief, without losing the memory of those lost. I sent this book to my daughter and told her that she must read it.

When I finished this book, I cried, and I haven't cried in a decade. What a heartwarming story about love and relationships - between both humans and with their 4 legged family members. I had no idea what I was getting in to when I bought this book, but the cover photo had me hooked before I ever opened the cover. I've purchased several copies of Cleo that will become holiday gifts for all my cat loving friends.

Some books on Optimal Control seem to be written for people who have been studying it and using it for decades. They use the notations of modern mathematics like set theory that I never learned the first time around. This book is different. It's an excellent introduction for those of us who know math, including vector and matrix calculus, but don't "speak the lingo" of professionals in the field. I've been looking for decades for a book that speaks MY language, and doesn't try to snow me with a lot of lemmas and proofs.I think I've found it.

This is a well-written, easy-to-follow text on deterministic optimal control. Lots of explanations, although somewhat tedious, e.g. many cases and pages for the boundary conditions in Pontryagin's principle; [Flemming and Rishel] has one single theorem that covers them all. But [FR] is a math text, Kirk's is an engineering text.The text is intended for undergraduate seniors and first-year graduates. There are selected answers to exercises.

My professor chose this book to use in an Optimal Control class partly because it is very affordable. On top of that, its contents are superb, giving very clear explanations of the fundamental principles underlying Optimal Control for nonlinear/linear systems.Despite its long history, I would think that all material are still relevant, although there are available more "modern" numerical techniques (nonetheless, it's still always good to know how things were done "back in those days"). I would grade this as a must-have for the beginning student in Optimal Control. I have always been a fan of Dover books, publishing quality books at rock bottom prices. This one has just reinforced my liking of Dover Publishing.

Kirk is a great teacher writer and a master at connecting control theory with the calculus of variations

I bought this book for my Optimal Control class and it was just amazing. Very fun to read and just enough depth so that you do not get overwhelm. Really suggest it to anyone who is interested in the subject or need background on Dynamic Optimization and Optimal control.

This book is very useful for studying optimal control theory. It provides a clear explanation.I'd like to recommend it.
